 Sandy Erwin is a chainsaw wielding sexagenarian carving logs into art just outside of State College Pennsylvania. Her wife, Annette Hestres, is the master behind the staining/painting brush giving character to the carvings.


ABOUT THE ARTISTS


Sandy Erwin and Annette Hestres Garcia are both Penn State Alumni and live in State College, Pennsylvania. Sandy is  a self-taught chainsaw carver. Her wife, Annette Hestres Garcia, works on the staining and painting, giving the carvings character. 
Together, they create works of art from works of nature.


Sandy's artistic career as a chainsaw carver began in 2021. She draws inspiration from nature, abstract artists, and worldwide chainsaw carvers. Her work has been exhibited at The Palmer Museum of Art (June 2026-Nov. 2026) and 3dotsDowntown (July 2026-Aug. 2026).
In addition to chainsaw carving, Sandy is a Licensed Massage Therapist and Jin Shin Jyutsu Practitioner who enjoys traveling, hiking, and visiting local medical facilities with their therapy dog, Trooper.


Annette’s artistic career began as a professional musician in Puerto Rico. Her preferred media are oil and acrylic painting, wood, and photography. She draws inspiration from music, abstract art, mindfulness, and spirituality-themed books. Annette's works have recently been exhibited at the Palmer Museum of Art ( June 2026-Nov, 2026), 3dotsDowntown (July 2026-Aug. 2026), the Bellefonte Art Museum (February 2025) and the State College Municipal Building (October 2025). Transformation (Installation) and Choose Me (Digital) were published in Conjuring: Love & Other Cautionary Tales (Sotomayor, 2024). 𝙸⨁ - Performative Art Installation on Black Joy (March 2025) as a book chapter (publication forthcoming) in The Book: When The “Rainbow Is Enuf”: Critical Race Love Letters From Black And Brown Women Adult Higher Education Educators Living In Joy (Merriweather, Howell & Gnanadass, Ed.).  
In addition to her art, Annette works in The College of HHD at Penn State University, is member of Artist of Registry of The Bellefonte Art Museum, serves on The Board of Centre LGBT+ and enjoys exploring new places with Sandy and Trooper.
